Un mot à mes chers amis de l’Association des fédéralistes anarchistes (l’AFA)
Mes chers amis,
Je vous connais presque tous personnellement et je sais quel est votre état d’esprit.
J’ai le sentiment que tous vous approuverez l’initiative que je prends et qu’aurait pu prendre tout comme moi n’importe lequel d’entre vous, s’il y eût songé.
Vous estimerez donc que, d’une part, il convient de répandre à profusion cette idée de la « Synthèse anarchiste » servant de base à un regroupement entièrement nouveau des forces anarchistes et que, d’autre part, il faut de toute urgence, donner à cette idée une forme pratique, une application positive.
Notre organisation (l’AFA) date d’hier. Cette extrême jeunesse lui vaut le précieux avantage de n’avoir pas été mêlée — en tant que groupement — aux déplorables conflits qui rongent et affaiblissent notre mouvement.
Je vous confie le soin de répandre partout la bonne nouvelle de la « synthèse anarchiste ». C’est à vous que les circonstances confèrent le droit et imposent le devoir de regrouper, sur la base de cette synthèse loyalement et fraternellement appliquée, les forces anarchistes résidant en France. Vite, vite, prenez à votre tour l’initiative de ce regroupement.
Convoquer, dès que possible, tous les camarades de votre localité ou quartier — sans distinction de tendance — que vous savez ou supposez être disposés à se grouper ou regrouper pour donner à notre chère propagande plus de cohésion, de rayonnement et d’efficacité.
Mettez en pratique ce paragraphe de notre projet d’organisation : « Chaque groupe fixera lui-même son mode de recrutement et d’organisation intérieure. »
Gardez-vous de demander à qui que ce soit qu’il abdique quoi que ce soit de ses préférences personnelles. Que chacun, au contraire, reste fidèle à la fraction qui cadre le mieux avec son tempérament, sa formation libertaire, sa conception anarchiste, les moyens de propagande dont il dispose, les méthodes de combat auxquelles il est le plus apte, le milieu de travail ou d’agitation auquel il appartient, le genre de vie qu’il mène, ses occupations professionnelles, etc., etc.
Il n’est pas question de fabriquer une sorte d’anarchiste-type tiré à quelques milliers d’exemplaires, et, partant, dénué de toute personnalité, caractère propre ou originalité.
Il s’agit seulement de rassembler, dans une atmosphère de franchise et de bonne amitié, tous ceux qui luttent activement contre l’exploitation et la domination que subissent individuellement et collectivement tous ceux qui travaillent à la conquête positive, pour tous et pour chacun, du bien-être et de la liberté.
Le champ est vaste. Que chacun y choisisse sa place. Mais que d’efforts peuvent être associés !
Antiparlementaire, anticapitaliste, antireligieux, anti-étatiste, antimilitariste ; est-il un anarchiste, un seul, qui ne soit pas tout cela ?
Faites appel à tous.
La confiance, l’élan, l’enthousiasme renaîtront. Que de grandes et fortes actions nous pourrons engager et que de belles et nobles campagnes nous pourrons entreprendre et mener à bien, coeurs fraternels et bras unis !…
Chers compagnons !
On ne manquera pas de ricaner, par-ci, par-là, et de se livrer aux plaisanteries faciles sur cet appel à l’embrassade générale.
Vous ne vous laisserez pas émouvoir par ces ricanements.
Ne vaut-il pas mieux, entre anarchistes, s’embrasser que se mordre, travailler ensemble que les uns contre les autres, vivre en paix que se faire la guerre ?
Nous sommes à la fois pleins de haine et d’amour.
Notre haine, nous en dirigeons toutes les forces contre les tenants et suppôts de l’Autorité.
Notre amour, nous en gardons tous les ressorts puissants pour les associer à ceux des anarchistes qui, comme nous, aiment la liberté luttent pour elle.
Que, à l’exception de ceux qui, réfractaires à l’idée même de l’organisation, préfèrent militer isolément, tous les compagnons apportent leur adhésion à notre association. Qu’ils se rallient aux groupes déjà existants. Que, dans les localités où il n’y a pas de groupe, ils en forment un et travaillent ensuite à le rendre nombreux et actif.
Attelons-nous à la besogne. Consacrons-nous à celle-ci avec passion et persévérance.

A word to my dear friends in the Association of Anarchist Federalists (AFA)
My dear friends,
I know nearly all of you personally and I know your state of mind.
I have the feeling that all of you would approve of the initiative that I am taking and that any one of you would have taken, if you had thought of it.
So you will appreciate that, on one hand, it is suitable to spread profusely this idea of the “Anarchist Synthesis,” serving as the basis for an entirely new regrouping of anarchist forces and that, on the other hand, it is an urgent necessity to give that idea a practical form, a positive application.
Our organization (the AFA) is quite new. That extreme youth brings it the precious advantage of not having been mixed up — as a group — in the regrettable conflicts that weaken and eat away at our movement.
I entrust to you the task of spreading the good news of the “anarchist synthesis” everywhere. It is to you that circumstances confer the right and impose the duty to group together the anarchist forces residing in France on the basis of that synthesis, faithfully and fraternally applied. Quickly, quickly, take, in your turn, the initiative in this regrouping.
Summon, as soon as possible, all the comrades of your locality or quarter — without distinction of tendency — that you know or suppose to be inclined to group or regroup in order to give more cohesion, influence and effectiveness to our dear propaganda.
Put into practice this paragraph from our plan of organization: “Each group will decide for itself the methods of recruitment and internal organization.”
Beware of asking anyone to surrender any of their individual preferences. On the contrary, let each remain faithful to the fraction that best suits their temperament, to their libertarian development, their idea of anarchism, the means of propaganda to which they are inclined, the methods of combat in which they are most capable, the environment, for labor or agitation, to which they belong, the type of life that they lead, their professional occupations, etc., etc.
There is no question of fabricating a sort of model anarchist, reproduced in some thousands of copes, and consequently devoid of any personality, character or originality.
It is simply a question of gathering, in an atmosphere of openness and good friendship, all those who struggle actively against the exploitation and domination endured, individually and collectively, by all those who work toward the positive conquest of well-being and liberty for each and for all.
The field is vast. Let each one choose their place there. But so many efforts can be associated!
Anti-parliamentary, anti-capitalist, anti-religious, anti-statist, anti-militarist; is there an anarchist, just one, who is not all of that?
Appeal to them all.
Confidence, momentum and enthusiasm will be reborn. What great and powerful actions we could undertake and what fine and noble campaigns would could begin and complete , fraternal hearts and arms joined!…
Dear comrades!
They will not fail to sneer, here and there, and to indulge in easy banter about this call to a general embrace.
You will not let yourself be moved by these jeers.
Wouldn’t it be better, among anarchists, to embrace than to bite, to work together rather than against one another, to live in peace rather than make war?
We are, at once, full of hatred and full of love.
As for our hatred, let us direct all of its strength against the disciples and henchmen of Authority.
As for our love, let us preserve all its powerful springs in order to associate them with those of the anarchists who, like us, love liberty and struggle for it.
Let all the comrades, with the exception of those who, resistant to the very idea of organization, prefer to campaign in isolation, become members of our association. Let them join already existing groups. In the localities where there are no groups, let them form one and then work to make it large and active.
Let us set ourselves to the work. Let us devote ourselves to it with passion and perseverance.
