Dans le monde, mais pas du monde
…Je leur ai donné la parole et le monde les a haïs, parce qu’ils ne sont pas du monde, comme moi je ne suis pas du monde. Je ne te prie pas de les ôter du monde, mais de les préserver du mal. Ils ne sont pas du monde, comme moi je ne suis pas du monde. Sanctifie-les par ta vérité : ta parole est la vérité. Comme tu m’as envoyé dans le monde, je les ai aussi envoyés dans le monde… (Jean, 17, 14-19).
À remarquer que c’est aux disciples, à tous les disciples, par suite que ces paroles sont adressées. Dans le monde, certes, — pour y agir, puisqu’ils y ont été envoyés, — mais non du monde. Rien de commun avec ce monde d’égoïsme et d’oppression Pas du monde, mais dans le monde, pour y être tes imitateurs, ô Christ, car si nous étions du monde, attachant une affection quelconque aux passions qui le font vivre, nous serions aussi éloignés d’être tes disciples que si nous n’étions pas dans le monde, pour te l’amener et pour y établir ton Règne.

In the World, but Not of the World
…I have given them the word and the world has hated it, because they are not of the world, as I am not of the world. I do not ask you to take them from the world, but to preserve them from evil. They are not of the world, as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by your truth: your word is the truth. As you have sent me into the world, I have also sent them into the world… (John 17: 14-19).
Note that it is to the disciples, thus to all the disciples, that these words are addressed. In the world, certainly, — in order to act there, because they have been sent, — but not of the world. Nothing in common with this world of selfishness and oppression. Not of the world, but in the world, in order to be your imitators there, Christ, for if we were of the world, attaching any affection whatsoever to the passions that animate it, we would be as far from being your disciples as if we were not in the world, in order to lead it to you and to establish your Kingdom there.
