BACCHANALES n. f. pl. Les bacchanales, fêtes païennes en l’honneur de Bacchus, analogues aux dionysies de Grèce, étaient pratiquées surtout en Étrurie et à Rome. Elle devinrent rapidement prétexte à débauches et à crimes. À la suite d’un procès monstre, dans lequel plus de sept mille personnes furent impliquées et un grand nombre furent condamnées à mort ou à la prison (an 186 av. J.-C.), les bacchanales furent interdites par un sénatus-consulte dont on a conservé le texte. ― Au singulier et en langage familier, on désigne sous le nom de bacchanales, une débauche bruyante.

BACCHANALIA n. pl. The Bacchanalia, pagan feasts in honor of Bacchus, analogous to the Dionysia of Greece, were mostly practiced in Etruria and Rome. They rapidly became pretexts for debauchery and crimes. Following a monstrous trial, in which more than seven thousand persons were implicated and a large number were condemned to death or to prison (186 B.-C.), the bacchanalia were forbidden by a sénatus-consulte, the text of which has been preserved. ― In the singular and in familiar language, one designates under the name of bacchanalia, a noisy orgy.
