La Encuesta de Steubenville
Con esté número único quieren sus editores, el grupo “LOS ICONOCLASTAS” de Steubenville, Ohio, celebrar la encuesta por ellos iniciada a mediados de 1926 y terminada un año más tarde. Fue una consulta a que respondieron compañeros de diversos países y que puede afirmarse que no ha sido inútil; por lo menos ha demostrada la posibilidad de une más amplia colaboración internacional.

Algunos de los participantes trataron los ocho puntes de la encuesta, otros se concretaron solamente a tratar algunos. Pero la suma do los opiniones y sugestiones reunidas en esta serie de trabajos es un exponente del estado del pensamiento anarquista en la actualidad. Se encontrarán conceptos de distinto valor, visiones profundas y puntos de vista reveladores de una comprensión insuficiente de nuestros problemas; so advertirá en unos más claridad y acierto y en otros menos, pero todos concuerdan en la buena voluntad para trabajar por un porvenir mejor para la anarquía.
Tal vez esta fuera la oportunidad de hace una confrontación critica de las opiniones vertidas en la encuesta de Steubenville, pero nos llevaría mucho espacio.
Sin embargo nos permitimos esta sugestión: Sobre el primer punto, et más vital a nuestro juicio para el anarquismo en la actualidad, se han producido trabajos de un valor y une importancia de que testimonia la serie de colaboradores cuyos nombres hemos apuntada. El grupo iniciador que ha hecho un esfuerzo tan intenso durante más de un año y que ha querido coronar el éxtio de un empresa con esta revista, no debería descansar hasta recoger en volumen algunas de las respuestas al primer punto, haciendo luego lo mismo con las otros a medida de las posibilidades. Se prestaría así un buen servicio a los estudiosos y se pondría en manos de los interesados una magnifica fuente de sugestiones.

The Steubenville Survey
With this unique number they want their editors, the group “LOS ICONOCLASTAS” of Steubenville, Ohio, to hold the survey they started in mid-1926 and finished a year later. It was a question that was answered by colleagues from different countries and it can be said that it has not been useless; at least it has demonstrated the possibility of a wider international collaboration.

Some of the participants dealt with the eight points of the survey, others just tried to treat some. But the sum of the opinions and suggestions gathered in this series of works is an exponent of the state of anarchist thought today. You will find concepts of different value, deep insights and revealing points of view of an insufficient understanding of our problems; he will notice in some more clarity and success and in others less, but all agree in the good will to work for a better future for anarchy.
Maybe this was the opportunity to make a critical confrontation of the opinions expressed in the Steubenville survey, but it would take us a lot of space.
However we allow this suggestion: On the first point, and most vital to our opinion for anarchism today, there have been works of a value and an importance that testifies to the series of collaborators whose names we have pointed out. The initiating group that has made such an intense effort for more than a year and that has wanted to crown the success of a company with this magazine, should not rest until collecting in volume some of the answers to the first point, doing the same with the others tailored to the possibilities. Thus, a good service would be provided to the students and a magnificent source of suggestions would be placed in the hands of the interested parties.

Iniciativa del grupo “Los Iconoclastas” De Steubenville
El grupo “Los Iconoclastas,” de Steubenville, Ohio (Estados Unidos), ha resuelto solicitar de un determinado número de camaradas de solvencia intelectual y de reconocida experiencia, su opinión sobre la situación actual de nuestro movimiento y los medios para unificar el esfuerzo libertario del mundo, hoy lamentablemente disperso y reducido a una forzosa inactividad.
Esperamos que todos aquellos camaradas que puedan decir algo a tal respecta prestarán su más decidida cooperación voluntaria a este ensayo de orientación internacional tan indispensable, dando su parecer sobre los temas que a continuación anotamos.
Nosotros consideramos de una trascendental importancia un esfuerzo común de todos los anarquistas del mundo para poner coto a los desmanes y a la soberbia imperante, que prospera por falta de un acuerdo mutuo entre le clase trabajadora.
Por tal razón “Los Iconoclastas” haremos un esfuerzo especial para que revolucionario divulguen los puntos que proponemos en la encuesta.
En recuerdo de la buena táctica de los viejos certámenes españoles, este grupo fijará un premio que no excederá de 25 pesos oro americano a los trabajos que contengan las proposiciones más susceptibles de merecer el reconocimiento internacional.
Los trabajos que se reciban serán publicados en español en al SUPLEMENTO semanal de LA PROTESTA, por ser la publicación más difundida y reapiadas hoy en los países de habla castellana. Al mismo tiempo nos merece LA PROTESTA un respeto profundo por su lucha continua en sus 30 años de combate y de exposición anarquista. A las cruzadas gloriosas de LA PROTESTA nos une un cariño y un recuerdo imborrables.
Confiamos que nuestro ruego no será desoído, pues la situación del anarquismo, nos parece, podría ser muy diverso si pudiéramos poner en tensión el esfuerzo armónico de los anarquistas del mundo entero.
Nos sentimos llenos de un grandioso optimismo al abrir nuestra encuesta con un artístico dibuja del artista y camarada F. Sagristá, que quiso también ayudarnos dando así principio con su alegoría a nuestro propósito de aunar y mancomunar voluntades.
El cuestionario sobre los temas propuesto es el siguiente:
- — Sobre los problemas actuales del anarquismo y medios par provocar un esfuerzo anarquista internacional contra la reacción autoritaria.
- — La anarquía como principio de organización de las sociedades, ¿es o no revolucionaria?
- — Siendo una idea humana, ¿es o no proletaria la anarquía?
- — ¿Qué orientación debe darse en el presente a los niños para que labren ellos mismos lo antes posible su emancipación?
- — ¿Por qué sendas creen los compañeros que debe orientarse el arte en América y Europa para saturar mas el ambiente del anarquismo?
- — ¿Qué concepto merecen las tendencias individualistas en el movimiento obrero, actualmente?
- — ¿Cuál es el valor de la tradición y en qué medida deberá seguírsela?
- — Para soterrar mas hondo y deshacer viejas creencias petrificadas en las mentes ¿pudieran los camaradas historiar el origen, bases y fundamentos de la Biblia?

SURVEY
Initiative of the group “Los Iconoclastas” of Steubenville
The group “The Iconoclasts,” of Steubenville, Ohio (United States), has resolved to request from a certain number of comrades of intellectual solvency and recognized experience, their opinion on the current situation of our movement and the means to unify the libertarian effort of the world, today unfortunately dispersed and reduced to a forced inactivity.
We hope that all those comrades who can say something in this regard will lend their most determined voluntary cooperation to this essay of such indispensable international orientation, giving their opinion on the topics that we write below.
We consider of a transcendental importance a common effort of all the anarchists of the world to put an end to the excesses and to the prevailing arrogance, which prospers due to the lack of a mutual agreement between the working class.
For this reason “The Iconoclasts” we will make a special effort so that the revolutionary divulge the points that we propose in the survey.
In remembrance of the good tactics of the old Spanish contests, this group will set a prize that will not exceed 25 American gold pesos to the works that contain the proposals most likely to deserve international recognition.
The papers that are received will be published in Spanish in the weekly SUPPLEMENT of LA PROTESTA, as it is the most widely disseminated and reappointed publication in the Spanish-speaking countries today. At the same time, LA PROTESTA deserves a deep respect for its continuous struggle in its 30 years of combat and anarchist exposition. The glorious crusades of LA PROTESTA unite us with an indelible love and memory.
We trust that our request will not be ignored, because the situation of anarchism, it seems to us, could be very different if we could put in tension the harmonic effort of the anarchists of the whole world.
We feel full of great optimism when we open our survey with an artistic drawing by the artist and comrade F. Sagristá, who also wanted to help us, thus giving principle with his allegory to our purpose of joining and joining together wills.
The questionnaire on the proposed topics is as follows:

- What is the value of tradition, and to what extent should it be followed?
- In order to undermine more deeply and dissipate old beliefs that have become fossilized in popular thought, should comrades explain historically the Bible’s origin and fundamental bases?

El dibujo de Sagristá
El dibujo del camarada Sagristá, que intercalamos en este numero en hoja suelta, quiere representar las dos formas de lucha armada en las contiendas sociales contemporáneas: el militarismo y la guerrilla. El fondo y el argumento es dada por la revolución rusa. De una parte los magnates del bolchevismo y de otra la insurrección de los campesinos ukranianos. Todavía hoy, a pesar de no quedar rastros del levantamiento campesino encabezado por el compañero Nestor Machno, la única fuerza hostil al estatismo, al militarismo y al capitalismo de los bolshevistas, está en el campo, en la población campesina. Pero del campo no surge el ejercito regular, que engendra forzosamente la dictadura, si es que no es ya un instrumento de esta, surge la guerrilla, la autonomía del esfuerzo y la convergencia de los resultados y de las voluntades. De ahí que nosotros, adversarios de todo militarismo, abriguemos fundadas simpatías hacia el guerrillero revolucionario. El militarismo es adversario irreductible de la revolución; la guerrilla puede ser un aliciente revolucionario.

The drawing by Comrade Sagristá, which we insert in this issue on a single sheet, wishes to represent the two forms of armed struggle in contemporary social struggles: militarism and guerrilla warfare. The background and the argument is given by the Russian revolution. On the one hand, the magnates of Bolshevism and, on the other, the insurrection of the Ukrainian peasants. Even today, despite not being traces of the peasant uprising headed by comrade Nestor Makhno, the only force hostile to the statism, militarism and capitalism of the Bolshevists, is in the countryside, in the peasant population. But the regular army does not emerge from the countryside, which necessarily engenders the dictatorship, if it is not already an instrument of this, the guerrilla arises, the autonomy of effort and the convergence of results and wills. That is why we, adversaries of all militarism, harbor well-founded sympathies towards the revolutionary guerrilla. Militarism is the irreducible adversary of the revolution; the guerrilla can be a revolutionary incentive.
