IMPUTATION n. f. (du latin imputare, porter en compte)

Inculpation, fondée ou non. Attribution d’actes blâmables. Bien souvent l’imputation n’est qu’une calomnie (voir ce mot). Combien de gens, par envie, par rancune, par haine, ont fait envoyer leurs semblables en prison, au bagne même, par des imputations qu’animait uniquement un dessein de vengeance ou de nuisibilité. Que de personnes se livrent encore couramment à des imputations sur ceux qui les entourent, provoquant ainsi des dénouements quelquefois tragiques…

Il faut se garder de faire une imputation à la légère. Il faut tenir en suspicion les imputations qui ne sont pas accompagnées de preuves évidentes, irréfragables, ne s’y livrer soi-même qu’à bon escient et sous la réserve du doute, et en dehors de toute hostilité préconçue. Le bon sens, l’examen critique sont les premiers obstacles à dresser devant les imputations inconsidérées ou méchantes. Seules la démonstration, la lumière de la vérité, une volonté arrêtée de défense réduiront à l’impuissance l’arme souvent empoisonnée de l’imputation ignorante, maladive ou malfaisante.

Indictment, well-founded or not. Attribution of blameworthy acts. Quite often the imputation is only a calumny (see that word). How many people, through envy, resentment or hatred, have sent their fellows to prison, even to the penal colony, through imputations entirely animated by the aim of vengeance or harmfulness. How many persons are still commonly given to imputations against those who surround them, sometimes bringing about tragic outcomes…

We must take care not to make an imputation lightly. We must hold in suspicion the imputations that are not accompanied by obvious, irrefutable proofs, to only engage with them wisely and subject to doubt, and apart from all preconceived hostility. Common sense and critical examination are the first obstacles to be raised against reckless or malicious imputations. Only demonstration, the light of truth and a firm will to defend will reduce to impotence the often poisoned weapon of ignorant, obsessive, or malicious imputation.
