LOGOMACHIE (FR/EN)
LOGOMACHY n. (from logos, speech et machê, combat)
Logomachy is a quarrel, a dispute of words, that is to say over words. It is, in equivocation, a pointless exchange of misleading statements that do not illuminate the questions debated or enrich the mind. This style of psittacism is much more frequent than is generally thought, and Proudhon rightly accused philosophy of being “often only a logomachy”.
The avant-garde milieus persnickety or unbalanced sparring matches, which shuffle about at the threshold of profitable discussion. Systems and individuals alike are sacrificed there, and the true basis and character are often forgotten amidst vague and fruitless controversies. Many economists and sociologists have fallen into logomachy… The improper uses of terms, vagueness in designations, the capricious definitions: these are so many obstacles to the progress of the exact sciences; and Buffon could denounce as logomachy “these creations of new semi-technical, half-metaphysical words, which clearly represent neither the effect nor the cause.”
In an era when the spoken is all-powerful and democracy is in fact only an Areopagus of chatterboxes cluttering up the forum, politics could not fail to take on this idiosyncrasy and to illustrate its sleight-of-hand with it. .
