CABAL (FR/EN)

CABAL n. We designate by the name of cabal a plot, an intrigue led by the partisans of a doctrine, of a coterie. Ex.: When a politician becomes to powerful, their colleagues, envious of their good fortune, do not fail to mount a cabal against them, pour le faire tomber. Les cabales sont très fréquentes dans le monde politique. The word cabal is also used very specifically to designate an association formed in order to bring failure to a dramatic author. Ex.: A veritable cabal was organized against Henry Bataille, when he staged l’Animateur, a piece in which the authority glorified Jaurès and stigmatized Léon Daudet. We must be careful not to let ourselves be influenced by the cabals, which can sometimes attack an upstanding man whom some find a nuisance, precisely because of his integrity. In its literal sense, the word cabal has yet another sense that it is befitting not to ignore. Coming from the Hebrew Kabbalah (tradition), it is, among the Jews, a mysterious interpretation of the Bible, transmitted by a continuous chain of initiates. (It then takes a capital letter.) Elaborated in the two centuries that preceded Christianity, expounded in books such as the Sefer Yetzirah and the Zohar, the Kabbalah is literal and accacérique [?]; it attributes a symbolic meaning to the letters of the alphabet and to the chiffres, and interprets their combinations. The Kabbalah has exerted a great influence not only on Judaism, but on the human mind in general. It has counted among its adepts: Philon, Avicenna, Raymond Lulle, Pic de la Mirandole, Paracelsus, Reuchlin, etc… In the end it has lapsed into theurgy and magic.

CABOTINAGE (FR/EN)

HAM-ACTING n. Act of the ham or poser, the person who puts on a noisy act in order to assert themselves or reach their goals. The politicians are past masters in the art of hamming it up. We must never forget that all posing reveals some lack of sincerity. We must never give credence to the posers.

CACHET (FR/EN)

CACOPHONIE (FR/EN)

CACOPHONY n. (du grec kakos, mauvais et phônê, voix). A meeting of words or syllables that hurts the ear is called a cacophony. Classic example: Ciel, si ceci se sait, etc… The best writers have sometimes fallen into cacophony, like Voltaire writing:

Non, il n’est rien que Nanine n’honore

By extension we call cacophony a disagreeable mix of discordant sounds. Ex.: The Chamber of Deputies is in general the realm of cacophony. Cacophony always produces a bad impression. So we must be careful, in discussions, debates and meetings, not to speak all at once, unless we wish to practice obstruction against a speaker.
